The San Mateo County Sheriff's Forensics Laboratory is a one-story, 29,000 sq. ft. office building. Powered by a half-acre of photovoltaic solar panels, the laboratory is the largest solar electric project in the San Mateo County. The building houses laboratory space to conduct a variety of analyses for the county, including DNA typing, fingerpring analysis, drug testing, toxicology, blood-alcohol levels, firearms, and crime scene processing.
Key Sustainable Components include:
· Sloped shed roofs on two thirds of its roof surface to maximize the potential from the installation ofalmost 1/2 acre ofphotovoltaic panels.
· The design arranged the occupied spaces at the perimeter where the views of the natural local hillsides are maximizedand natural ventilation could be provided by means of operable windows, which are interlocked with the HVAC system.
· Recycled Productsincluding: CMU, Carpet & Backing, linoleum flooring, exterior aluminum panels.
· Rapidly Renewable Products including bamboo flooring
· Clerestorywindows& skylights for additional daylight harvesting.
