Turner provided preconstruction and construction services for the Emory University Winship Cancer Institute located on the campus of Emory University. The six-story facility is approximately 200,000 gross square feet including approximately 3,000 square feet of renovation.
The design includes light sensors to reduce energy consumption, an energy recovery system, CO2 monitoring, and low irrigation plantings to reduce water usage. Low VOC paints were also used on the building to promote a healthier working environment.
Perhaps the greatest environmental challenge of this project was preserving the only two remaining Ginko trees in the Atlanta area. Part of the Winship project was to revise Emory University's storm run-off system, but the existing storm line ran within the drip lines of the Ginko trees. Turner utilized a pipe replacement method known as Pipe Bursting that allowed new pipe to be installed without having to remove the ancient trees from the ground.
