project at a glance

Building 511 at Walter Reed, Forest Glen Annex, is a 67,518 square foot two-story structure constructed in 1971 as a Laboratory Vivarium to house non-human primates and large and small animal species, in support of research to protect and sustain the warfighter and Army global medical solutions. Building 511’s infrastructure is beyond its serviceable life and not in accordance with current building codes or design practices.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, selected the design-build team of Turner Construction and Jacobs Engineers using a two-step, Best Value procurement process. The scope of work calls for the design and construction of a 5,000 square foot addition and the complete renovation of infrastructure and finishes within Building 511. Interior and exterior finishes, including doors, windows, roof, cabinets, ceilings, and floor and wall coverings will be repaired and/or replaced, as well as all electrical, fire alarm, mechanical, and plumbing systems, including associated fixtures and control systems. Emergency generators, elevator, and built-in refrigerator will also be repaired and/or replaced. All replacement systems and finishes will incorporate sustainable principles, to meet LEED Silver Certification.

The new and renovated areas will contain Biocontainment Level 2 (BSL-2), labs, surgical and dental suites for large animals, and will be designed in accordance with current Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AALAC), FDA, and NIH Standards. The addition will house large, specialty research equipment and it will be isolated from vibration and sound transmission. Early construction activities will include renovations of a Hypo- and Hyperbaric Suite (ocean depth simulators), which will be occupied by the Navy.
