The Lexington Medical Center and Bed Tower Pavilion renovation and addition included updates to 169,000 square feet and an addition of 273,000 square feet to the original hospital. Construction included a steel structure, exterior masonry skin, precast and metal panels. Interior space in the Bed Tower includes 90- beds spread over five-stories with two stories shelled for future use, 21 operating rooms, pre and post-operative support space, a kitchen and dining area, a central sterile suite with three sterilizers and a cart washer, as well as relocated big equipment. Added spaces include 52,000 square feet of upgraded radiology space and 20 ICU beds.
Work included expansion of the hospital's Central Energy Plant by 12,000 square feet and expansion of the facility’s ice generating, electrical and chilled water capacity.
The Tower was constructed to within three inches of the Hospital’s exterior with multiple tie-in points, and required very complex phasing. At peak construction over 350 trade people per day worked on the project with approximately 60 major subcontractors contributing to this endeavor.
