The phased renovation and expansion of PGE Park to accommodate Major League Soccer’s Portland Timbers consisted of two separate phases of work completed over successive off-seasons accommodating the baseball and soccer playing seasons. The project included the addition of a new playing field, a new cantilevered roof covering most of the new seating bowl, club seating with a full-service restaurant, new grandstands with concessions, a new training facility, new entrances, renovated and upgraded locker rooms and new restrooms. A new low-impact synthetic playing surface accommodates strict FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) and Major League Soccer guidelines. The stadium is now called JELD-WEN Field.
The centerpiece of this addition is a sleek cantilevered roof that covers much of the seating bowl. The steel roof structure is largely exposed and spans roughly 120-feet. This feature puts a new stamp on the facility creating a dramatic backdrop in welcoming the second major league franchise to Portland.
The project also included construction of a 12,000 square foot training and rehabilitation center for Providence Health & Services.
