Turner Construction Company Celebrates 20 Years of Buildng in Kansas City

Turner Shapes the Skyline and Community for Two Decades

Kansas City, Mo., April 3, 2009– This year, Turner Construction Company commemorates the firm’s 20th anniversary of building in Kansas City. From an original staff of six, the office now has more than 100 full-time employees working to shape the skyline and community and is one of the largest construction firms in Kansas City serving the four-state region of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa.

Turner’s Kansas City office completed $213 million of construction in 2008 and currently has the highest level of work underway since the office was established. Currently, Turner is constructing a $40 million renovation of the University of Kansas Allen Fieldhouse, $22 million of renovation work for the Olathe School District and the new $16 million Odessa Elementary School.

Turner has constructed some of the most significant projects in the region, including:

• New Arrowhead Stadium and Training Facility for the KC Chiefs
• Bartle Hall Original Expansion
• Liberty Memorial Expansion
• University of Kansas Anderson Family Football Complex
• Overland Park Convention Center and Sheraton Hotel
• Nebraska Furniture Mart
• Kansas Speedway
• Branson Convention Center
• Briarcliff Hilltop Office Building
• Kansas City Power and Light District Parking Garage
• Kansas Life Sciences Innovation Center at the University of Kansas Medical Center
• Pat Roberts Hall-Kansas State University BioSecurity Research Institute
• University of Kansas Allen Fieldhouse Renovation
• Johnson County Adult Detention Facility Expansion

Turner is also an active member of the communities in which it builds. Last year, Turner awarded 57 contracts to area minority- and women-owned enterprise (M/WBE) firms totaling more than $37 million. To provide support to local M/WBE firms, Turner has held the Turner School of Construction Management training program in Kansas City since 1998 and has graduated more than 350 M/WBE participants. The Turner School of Construction Management training program was developed and is facilitated by Turner employees to provide women, minority and other small-business owners to expand their economic opportunities in the marketplace.

In 2008, Turner also awarded $12,000 in scholarships to ACE Mentor students in the Kansas City chapter. The ACE Mentor program serves to increase the awareness of high school students to career opportunities in architecture, construction and engineering fields through mentoring and scholarship opportunities

In addition, Turner has raised more than $150,000 for research and programs for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in the past four years through the company’s Turner Invitational Golf Tournament.

“I am privileged to have the opportunity to lead Turner’s Kansas City office at this point in our history. We are able to achieve our goals by serving our clients and remaining faithful to our core values of teamwork, integrity and commitment first set forth by our founder Henry C. Turner in 1902,” says Dewey Newton, Vice President and General Manager of Turner’s Kansas City operations.
