Turner Awarded Contract To Construct New Yankee Stadium In Bronx, N.Y.
New York, N.Y., September 20, 2006 – Turner Construction Company has been awarded a contract for preconstruction and construction management services for the new Yankee Stadium in Bronx, N.Y. Tishman Speyer is serving as the owner’s representative and HOK Sports is the architect of record. Turner broke ground on the project in August and completion of the stadium is scheduled for the beginning of the 2009 baseball season.
The 1,500,000-sq.-ft., 50,800-seat stadium will in many ways reflect the original stadium with a landmark façade and similar field dimensions. The main structure will be a hybrid of cast-in-place concrete on the lower levels and structural steel for the upper levels and roof canopy. The roof canopy will be ringed with the familiar frieze similar to the original stadium constructed in 1923. The field will sit 12-ft. below street-level, allowing for easier access and vertical transportation to the six different levels of the building. The new stadium will also feature 67 premium suites.
“We are proud to have been selected by The New York Yankees and Tishman Speyer for this landmark project,” said Charles Murphy, vice president and general manager of Turner’s New York office.
